NLC City Summit 2023
November 16th - November 19th, 2023
Commissioners traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the 99th annual City Summit hosted by the National League of Cities. The Commission's Chair, Andrea Mercado-Cruz, was one of the planners for the Youth Delegate Sessions. The Commission had the opportunity to network, participate in workshops, and explore the city!
TJ Community Closet Donation Drive
October 21st, 2023
Commissioner Chloe Hawkins is opening a Community Closet at Thomas Jefferson High School! Several Commissioners went out to help in the collection and organization of donations.
June 8th - June 12th, 2023,
Commissioners Corpus, Rojas, Hawthorne, Hawkins, and Mercado-Cruz represented the Dallas Youth Commission at the All-American City Awards, presenting our initiatives and showcasing our hard work to a panel of judges. They also had the opportunity to network with other cities and youth councils from across the nation! Dallas was one of the 10 cities that received the award for its efforts in improving the lives of youth in the city.
NLC and Washington D.C. Trip 2023!
March 22nd - March 28th, 2023
Commissioners traveled to the nation's capital to participate in the National League of Cities Youth Summit! Working with Commissioners from around the country, they used critical problem-solving skills to come up with innovative initiatives. They were also able to visit the Capitol and meet with Colin Allred, a Congressional Representative, as well as visit the White House.
Youth Advisory Commission Summit
February 3rd-5th, 2023
Commissioners spent months planning the YAC Summit, where Commissions from around Texas came to Dallas and participated in DYC-planned workshops. These workshops taught meaningful lessons that Commissions can take back to their communities to inspire change!
MLK Multicultural Event at City Hall
January 14th, 2023
An event inspired by Commissioner Hilton Sampson that introduced different cultures from around the world to City of Dallas employees. This event was a teaser to a bigger event that will be taking place in May to celebrate World Cultures Day.
Mayor's State of the City Address
November 15th, 2022
Commissioners were fortunate enough to attend this event and listen to Mayor Johnson talk about the city's accomplishments, as well as setbacks, and future projects that will make Dallas a better place for all residents.
Community Closet Grand Opening
November 1st, 2022
Commissioner Margarita Hernandez hosts the Grand Opening of her initiative, the Community Closet, at L.G Pinkston High School.
Town Hall for Teens w/ NTARUPT
October 19th, 2022
The Dallas Youth Commission, alongside NTARUPT's Youth Advisory Board, discussed sexual education and safety with teens from across the city. They also participated in a panel and engaged in one-on-one discussion with the attendees, collecting feedback.
Girls in Aviation w/ Dallas Love Field
September 24th, 2022
Commissioners Arran Davis and Malajah Hawthorne volunteered alongside Dallas Love Field workers at the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center. They were able to meet members of the community and lend a helping hand.
Community Closet Donation Drive
September 3rd, 2022
Youth Commissioners collected supplies for the Community Closet. They met other members of the community as they were bringing in donations. Commissioners Margarita and Ricardo were interviewed as well!
Magazine Distribution @ City Hall
August 8th, 2022
Commissioners Ricardo Corpus, Andrea Mercado, and Arran Davis, alongside other members of the magazine committee, were able to welcome the 52,000 copies of the Dallas Youth Magazine at City Hall. They allocated magazines to over 8 schools!
Mayor's Back to School Fair
August 5th, 2022
Aside from being able to meet the Mayor, Erik Johnson, Commissioners handed out backpacks and flyers to teenagers and families attending the fair. They were also able to establish connections from other organizations from around the City.
Pinkston Back to School Fair
July 23rd, 2022
Commissioners Margarita Hernandez, Andrea Mercado, and Myles Sturns-Thomas spread the word about the Youth Commission to teens and families at L.G. Pinkston High School. They handed out flyers and goodies, as well as QR codes to the Youth Feedback form. They got over 40 responses!
National League of Cities - DC
March 11th-16th, 2022
The entire Youth Commission was able to meet with other teens from around the country at the National League of Cities Conference. They discussed ideas to improve their communities and talked about ongoing projects. They were able to listen to several important political figures, some of which included President Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg.
Mayor's Summer of Safety Celebration
August 27th, 2022
Several Youth Commissioners handed out school supplies to families, shared flyers about the town hall with teens who attended, and made connections with several other city organizations there. Our Chair also gave a speech introducing the mayor.
